Each week, Fox Medical Expert, Dr. Archelle Georgiou, reviews some of the weeks's most interesting health news. THis week she talks about:
1) Facial Transplantation: Doctors in Spain successfully completed the world's first full facial transplant on a man who had suffered a shotgun would to the face. The patient received the entire facial skin and muscles - including eyelids, nose, cheekbones, lips and teeth, and jaw and facial arteries & veins- of a donor that was of similar weight, height, facial proportions and skin tone as the patient. He now has a totally new face from his hairline to his neck.
2. "Best" Hospitals and Doctors: US News & World Report's Best Hospitals list is developed using survey of the hospitals reputation (32.5%), survival data (32.5%) and other quality and safety measures (35%). But, a new analysis of list shows that their rankings primarily reflect the hospitals'reputation and not objective measures of hospital quality. Other rankings, such as Minneapolis-St Paul Magazine's Top Doctors list only uses reputation as the methodology for developing their list. Dr Georgiou shares her perspective on whether or not to rely on these lists to find doctors and hospitals.
3) Bret Michaels' Brain Hemorrhage. Bret Michaels was rushed to intensive care late Thursday when he complained of an excruciating headache pain that felt like he was“getting hit in the head with a baseball bat over and over again,” Doctors said they discovered bleeding at the base of his brain.
